The aims of the West Derby Society are:

1. Protect the beauty of the countryside.
2. Preserve buildings of artistic distinction.
3. Encourage quality of architecture and planning.
4. Eliminate and prevent ugliness whether from bad design or neglect.
5. Stimulate public interest and inspire a sense of civic pride.

The West Derby Society has a committee with a chairman, deputy chairman, honorary secretary, honorary treasurer, archivist and others. The Society takes an active role in planning and lobbies Liverpool City Council and others on new development and the preservation of the historic and natural environments.

It is joint custodian of the Grade II*-listed West Derby Courthouse, Britain’s only freestanding post-medieval courthouse. Volunteers open this former manor court 2 pm to 4 pm most Sundays April to October and to groups by appointment, admission free.

The West Derby Society focuses not only on Liverpool 12 (L12) and surrounding districts but also the historic Hundred of West Derby covering much of South Lancashire outside the centre of Liverpool.
